India Rescues Citizens:The Indian government is actively working to rescue citizens trapped in Cambodia who were deceived with job offers and coerced into cyber fraud schemes targeting people in India.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian embassy in Cambodia has collaborated with Cambodian authorities to rescue and repatriate approximately 250 Indians, including 75 in the last three months, as of March 31, 2024.
Jaiswal noted ongoing efforts to dismantle these fraudulent operations, with advisories issued to warn citizens about such scams.
Reports indicate over 5,000 Indians remain trapped in Cambodia, forced to perpetrate cyber frauds.
The Cambodia embassy in India has not yet responded to inquiries. Globally, cybercrime surged in 2023, with Palo Alto Networks reporting a 50% increase in disruptive cyberattacks on Indian government and essential services from 2022 to 2023.
Ian Lim, field chief security officer at Palo Alto Networks, emphasized the need for holistic cybersecurity approaches, noting that even well-funded organizations face breaches due to attackers exploiting vulnerabilities.
